چکیده

The atmosphere sounding experiment of the German CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload) satellite mission was activated on February 11, 2001. Since then more than 110,000 occultations were recorded as of mid-December 2002. The results of nearly two years CHAMP GPS (Global Positioning System) occultation measurements and data analysis have shown, that significant improvements of the GPS radio occultation technique were reached. CHAMP provides continuously GPS occultation measurements in spite of the activated antispoofing mode of the GPS. The data are analyzed by an operational processing system; the derived vertical atmospheric profiles are provided to the scientific community via the Information System and Data Center (ISDC). Using the operational occultation infrastructure at GFZ near-real-time provision of GPS occultation data and analysis results was demonstrated for the first time. The advantageous consequences for the GPS data processing due to the termination of the Selective Availability (SA) mode of the GPS (possible reduction of the GPS ground station acquisition rate for double differencing and feasibility of single difference processing) were demonstrated with the CHAMP data. Using the radioholographic technique for the data analysis characteristic frequency shifts of direct and reflected GPS signals have been determined in the observations. It was shown that these frequency shifts can be exploited to obtain information on ground elevation at the reflection point and ground-level refractivity.

GPS radio occultation with CHAMP : Initial results

Fig. 1. The German CHAMP satellite (view from antivelocity direction with GPS occultation antennas) Abstract: The German CHAMP (Challenging Minisatellite Payload) satellite (launched on July 15, 2000) is a geoscience mission aiming for the determination of Earth’s gravity and magnetic field and for GPS-based atmospheric sounding. The atmospheric profiling experiment onboard CHAMP was started in...

Vertical Gradients of Refractivity in the Mesosphere and Atmosphere Retrieved from GPS/MET and CHAMP Radio Occultation Data

Fine structures in the vertical gradient of the electron density have been retrieved by means of analysis of the amplitude of radio occultation (RO) data in sporadic E-layers (heights interval 85-110 km). Maximum values of the positive gradients 45⋅10, 48⋅10, 25⋅10, 29⋅10 [mkm] are located at levels 92, 105 km (GPS/MET event 0393) and 93.5, 100 km (GPS/MET event 0583). Variations in the vertica...

GPS Occultation Measurements with GPS/MET and CHAMP

First results from the GPS radio occultation experiment aboard the German CHAMP satellite are presented. The agreement between observed temperature profiles in the upper troposphere and the lower stratosphere and temperature profiles obtained from meteorological analyses is found to be below 1 K. The data processing and analysis system (operated by GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam) has been success...

Global monitoring of tropospheric water vapor with GPS radio occultation aboard CHAMP

The paper deals with application of GPS radio occultation (RO) measurements aboard CHAMP for the retrieval of tropospheric water vapor profiles. The GPS RO technique provides a powerful tool for atmospheric sounding which requires no calibration, is not affected by clouds, aerosols or precipitation, and provides an almost uniform global coverage. We briefly overview data processing and retrieva...
